Ocean Nexus is an ocean research institute built on The Nippon Foundation’s program for marine research capacity building. In collaboration with The Nippon Foundation, they develop innovative research aimed at bridging the gap between academics, policymakers, and those most dependent on the ocean. Their mission is to establish social equity at the center of ocean governance. For that, they conduct ocean equity research with empathy employing anti-racist, decolonization, and intersectionality as our analytical lens.
CCSL is a graduate training program hosted at the University of Victoria that delivers enriched interdisciplinary and intersectoral training to prepare the next generation of leaders with the knowledge, experience, and skills needed to rise to the challenge of climate change. Led Julia Baum (Professor and President’s Research Chair), along with a Core Team of 10 faculty, CCSL leverages UVic’s climate change expertise from across 19 different departments and institutes, as well as a network of >35 climate solutions partners from government, industry, and non-profits, including B.C.’s Climate Action Secretariat, the Canadian Climate Institute, and the United Nations through UVic’s CIFAL.
CCFS4N is a 4-year participatory research project project which aims to improve the knowledge about the potential impacts of climate change on seafood harvest and food security in coastal First Nations and to inform local and regional climate adaptation planning and action related to sustainable food systems. Partners on this project include Tla’amin Nation, ‘Namgis First Nation, Skidegate Band Council, academic researchers from University of Ottawa, Université Laval, University of Victoria, Université de Montréal, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the First Nations Health Authority.
Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET) is a collaborative research initiative that brings together over 40 partners, including Indigenous knowledge keepers and community leaders, to help bring Canada to net zero—one community at a time. ACET is a UVic-led initiative in collaboration with: Royal Roads University, UBC, Université du Québec à Trois Rivières, and Yukon University. From harvesting offshore wind, tidal and solar energy to innovative low-carbon financing and governance models, ACET is integrating breakthrough renewable energy technologies and solutions to scale positive impact for people, places and the planet.
The Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO) helps Canadians share knowledge locally and globally in order to create better societies and build peace in the minds of men and women. To do so, the Commission facilitates cooperation in the fields of education, science, culture, communication and information to address some of the most complex challenges facing the world today. With its initiatives and networks, CCUNESCO supports the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other UNESCO priorities. The Commission operates under the authority of the Canada Council for the Arts.
